Kruizenga Art Museum

Holland, MI, United States

The  Kruizenga Art Museum  (KAM) at Hope College in Holland, Michigan (USA) opened in September 2015. The striking 1,440 square meter pavilion-style museum provides two main exhibition spaces for the college’s extensive permanent collection and visiting exhibitions.

  • Located along a main campus pedestrian pathway, KAM accommodates flexible layouts along with spaces for the exhibition of the college’s permanent collection. The design of the building was a collaborative effort between the director of C Concept Design and Hope alumnus Matthew VanderBorgh ’84 and the lead donors, alumni Richard ’52 and Margaret Feldmann ’52 Kruizenga.

  • The KAM provides support for curation of the collections, as well as space and resources to view and study the museum’s 1,000+ works of art from the world. The museum was developed with an emphasis on engaging faculty and students across disciplines as well as local community members in the study and interpretation of art. The interior of the building provides a visually dynamic space for displaying the art.

  • KAM was designed to stand out from the other Hope campus buildings style. The façade of the building features a glass front with black granite panels sweeping around the sides in a dramatic sawtooth pattern. The interior features polished concrete floors, segmented walls, and open ceilings that complement its modernist exterior, and The distinctive ‘S’ shape, was inspired by the shape of a traditional artist’s paint palette.
